meet jeremy davis
Jeremy Davis is a dedicated husband, father, and Waco native who grew up in the heart of Commissioner Precinct 2. Raised by two pastors, he was instilled with a heart for service and has diligently served his community since elementary school.
Passion for the community
Upon graduating high school, Jeremy accepted an internship with Black Men for Bernie, traveling to over 40 states with the Bernie Sanders campaign. Returning home to Waco, Jeremy began working in Waco ISD as a behavior specialist, engaging directly with some of the most at-risk youth. Witnessing the challenges they faced, he was motivated to create Mentor Waco, a non-profit mentorship program dedicated to empowering lives and transforming futures of McLennan County youth.
Serving McLennan County
In addition to his work with Mentor Waco, Jeremy has served on various boards and commissions across McLennan County, including the Centex African-American Chamber Board of Directors, the City of Waco Park and Recreation Advisory Board, and a Community Advisory Board with United Way. He has also served as the NAACP Political Action Committee Co-Chair, a McLennan County Democratic Party Precinct Chair, a Voter Deputy Registrar, and a founding member of the McLennan County Gang Collaborative. He is a graduate of the Leadership Plenty Institute Cohort 12, which helped him refine his leadership skills.
Jeremy has been a pioneer in engaging young people in voter education and encouraging them to become election clerks at polling places during local elections. This initiative, successfully implemented in McLennan County, has been adopted by the state NAACP and several other organizations.
An Advocate For Education
In 2021, Jeremy was elected to the Waco ISD Board of Trustees, where he serves as board secretary and as the delegate to the Texas Association of School Boards. Additionally, he serves as the Central Region Vice President of the Texas Caucus of Black School Board Members. His education and experience have uniquely equipped him to understand the intricacies of the role of county commissioner, starting with overseeing the budget. His background as a trustee has enabled him to manage budgets ranging from $350 million to a few thousand dollars, allocating funds in a fiscally responsible manner while ensuring the greatest impact on the community.
No Stranger To community Work
Jeremy’s experience with several non-profits and working closely with vulnerable constituents has helped ensure effective programming and financial sustainability for these initiatives. For the past three years, he has worked in workforce development from Waco to Mart, equipping both young people and adults with the tools they need to enter or change their careers. As a member of the Board of Directors for the African American Chamber of Commerce, he has collaborated with businesses of all sizes to foster success and drive economic growth across McLennan County.
His work on the City of Waco Park and Recreation Advisory Board, particularly on the master trail plan, and his involvement in building five new schools across the community as a Waco ISD trustee, demonstrate his commitment to responsible infrastructure development. Over 60 percent of subcontractors on these projects were locally owned businesses, keeping tax dollars within McLennan County.
Jeremy has always led with a heart of service and a mind for the people, continuing a legacy of excellence and reaching new heights. He has been awarded the U.S. President’s Volunteer Service Lifetime Achievement Award, Omega Psi Phi Citizen of the Year, and Entrepreneur of the Year from the Waco Awards.
